چکیده
A mass occurrence of the thyasirid bivalve Thyasira montanita in a limestone bed, exposed at Punta Montañita on northern side Santa Elena peninsula southeastern Ecuador, is here identified as an ancient methane-seep deposit. The massive to nodular shows carbonate phases and microfabrics typical seep limestones, such banded botryoidal cements. Its δ13Ccarbonate values, low −52.6‰, suggest biogenic methane source. Furthermore, biomarkers ANME-2 archaea indicate high seepage rates. Tubular fossils previously interpreted worm tubes show cone-shaped projections internal structure consistent with that crustacean cuticle are fragments. Seep deposits occurrences bivalves have so far only been reported from Cretaceous, making deposit first example Cenozoic. faunal biomarker inventories this deposition open shelf; oysters upper surface likely secondary encrusters arrived after emergence shallower water.

A new tropical Oligocene dolphin from Montañita/Olón, Santa Elena, Ecuador
A new small probable Oligocene dolphin from Ecuador represents a new genus and species, Urkudelphis chawpipacha. The new taxon is known from a single juvenile skull and earbones; it differs from other archaic dolphins in features including widely exposed frontals at the vertex, a dorsally wide open vomer at the mesorostral groove, and a strongly projected and pointed lateral tuberosity of the p...
متن کاملThe Oligocene–Miocene Boundary – Antarctic Climate Response to Orbital Forcing
Recent AU :2 high-resolution Oligocene–Miocene oxygen isotopic records revealed a relatively transient, ca. 2myr period, 1m amplitude cyclicity in isotopic values (Oi and Mi events, respectively). Intriguingly, it has been suggested that these isotopic excursions in oceanic dO were linked to ephemeral growth and decay in Antarctic ice sheets. A great deal of effort in the palaeoceanography comm...
متن کاملThe Earliest Colubroid-Dominated Snake Fauna from Africa: Perspectives from the Late Oligocene Nsungwe Formation of Southwestern Tanzania
The extant snake fauna has its roots in faunal upheaval occurring across the Paleogene-Neogene transition. On northern continents, this turnover is well established by the late early Miocene. However, this transition is poorly documented on southern landmasses, particularly on continental Africa, where no late Paleogene terrestrial snake assemblages are documented south of the equator. Here we ...
متن کاملRadiocarbon Dates from a Holocene Deposit in Southwestern Australia
A radiocarbon chronology has been developed using shell, bulk peat, and paired charcoal and pollen preparations from a peat and clay sequence in southwestern Australia. The results indicate the sequence is of Holocene age, and the mid-Holocene was a period of rapid sediment deposition. The earliest record is based on Bothriembyron sp. snail shell and there is a strong indication that the deposi...
متن کاملA new species of EnyalioidEs (Iguanidae: Hoplocercinae) from southwestern Ecuador
We describe a new species of Enyalioides from lowland cloud forests in southwestern Ecuador. This represents the third species in the genus known to occur west of the Andes in South America; the other two species are E. heterolepis and E. oshaughnessyi. Among other characters, the new species can be distinguished from other members in the genus by having small, keeled, paravertebrals; a series ...
